Wood processing – efficient reduction of VOC, formaldehyde and odour emissions in the processing of wood-based materials

What is
exhaust air treatment in wood processing?

Industrial woodworking and wood processing – from sawmills and the production of chipboard, MDF and OSB panels to furniture and parquet production – uses thermal and mechanical finishing processes. Dryers, hot presses, gluing and coating stations generate high volume flows with specific gaseous emissions as a result of the process.

Modern exhaust air treatment ensures that formaldehyde, terpenes and solvents are effectively broken down in order to meet statutory requirements and avoid odour nuisance in the surrounding area.

Challenge: high volume flows, resins and formaldehyde emissions

Wood processing plants typically have warm, humid exhaust air streams containing a mixture of natural wood constituents and synthetic binders:

  • Formaldehyde from urea, melamine or phenol formaldehyde resins

  • Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) as well as natural terpenes and pinenes
  • Aerosols, waxes and sticky resin components
  • Dust and wood fibre particles in the raw gas streams
  • Very large exhaust air volume flows combined with low to medium pollutant concentrations

The role of catalysts in the wood industry

Catalytic oxidation processes have proven effective for the economical and environmentally sound removal of formaldehyde and VOCs.

Catalysts convert even diluted pollutant streams at low temperatures, without residue, into non-critical compounds:

Reaktionsgleichung: Formaldehyd und Sauerstoff reagieren am Katalysator zu CO2 und Wasser
Reaktionsgleichung: VOC und Sauerstoff reagieren am Katalysator zu CO2 und Wasser

This means:

Reliable compliance with the extremely strict formaldehyde limits with minimal supplementary fuel and low pressure drop.

Cost-effective at large volumes

Thanks to low operating temperatures, operating costs remain predictably low even with large exhaust air volumes (e.g. dryers, presses).

Effective odour neutralisation

Complete oxidation of odour-intensive terpenes and phenols for good acceptance among neighbours and authorities.

Robust, flow-optimised design

Clogging-resistant honeycomb or bulk-bed catalysts, matched to upstream stages carrying particles and resins.

Frequently asked questions

Answers on technology, legislation and processes.

Can existing wood-based panel plants be retrofitted?2026-10-15T13:08:53+02:00

Yes, retrofits are a typical application, especially to adapt existing press and dryer lines to tightened emission limits.

Can dryer exhaust air and press exhaust air be treated together?2026-10-15T13:08:53+02:00

That depends on the moisture and pollutant profiles. Exhaust air streams are often thermally preconditioned or captured separately so that the catalyst operates within its optimum range.

How is formaldehyde reduced in the exhaust air from wood-based panel presses?2026-10-15T13:08:53+02:00

Formaldehyde-based binders are used in the production of particleboard, MDF and OSB. In the press and while the boards cool, formaldehyde and other organic compounds enter the exhaust air, often together with wood dust, resin aerosols and a high moisture content. For catalytic oxidation of this exhaust air, pretreatment comes first: dust and sticky aerosols must be removed to the extent that they cannot clog the catalyst. The exhaust air is then brought to the required reaction temperature, often supported by heat exchangers that recover energy from the cleaned gas. Because press exhaust air has large flow rates at comparatively low concentrations, the energy balance is an essential part of the design. The temperature profile must also be chosen so that no condensate forms in the system. If you send us the flow rate, exhaust air temperature, measured values for formaldehyde and total carbon and details of the dust removal, we will check a suitable concept for your press.
